ownership disputes 1 Year, 1 Month ago
Does anyone know anything about ownership of land that lies within a water body, like a small island (or some rocks possibly too small to call an island)? Who owns rivers (towns, the state?) and do those owners preside over whatever the river flows around too? Or is it possible that if someone buys property with river frontage that the island may also be part of their parcel?

Any information would be great!

hi katie,
not sure what the answer is to your question, but you might want to contact your town's conservation commission. they're charged with regulating the wetlands protection act. while rivers aren't necessarily covered under that act, i bet they'd at least know who to refer you to, if they're not able to give you an answer. have you tried contacting your town too to see if they know?

you may need to find a lawyer who can help. i've heard of lawyers who specialize in river law who would probably know the answer if it's a river. don't know of any in particular to refer you to though. sorry!
