I am interested in finding a good forester who can help me figure out how to get started managing my woodlot. Although I have owned the land for 21 years, I am recently retired and finally have time to work in the woods. My hope would be sustainable forest management to improve my woods, cut produce some firewood and create better wildlife habitat. I would appreciate some advice about how to find a good forester from other landowners who have more experience with land management. Thanks!

i'd go to find local help off of the front page of massacorn. click on your town for a list of licensed foresters. in terms of other landowners, though, it is a good idea to ask around, get a second opinion. see who other people in your town have used and if they are happy. take a little extra time up front to ask around. remember: your forest is pretty old and has been around a while- no need to act really quickly!

I went to the find local help section and printed out the list of foresters who work in my town. That is exactly the information I was looking for, thanks! Do you know if a private forester will charge me to come out and look at my woods?

One other suggestion before selecting a forester. Ask the forester for some on the ground locations of some of his/her past work. Who are some of his/her clients. Take the time to visit these sites. Speak with the landowner to see if the forester met the landowners expectations and objectives. This step definately takes time but is well worth the effort invested. Do NOT dive into a buisness arrangement without first doing your homework!!
