do i have a vernal pool? 1 Year, 5 Months ago
i think i've heard about vernal pools somewhere- either in the newspaper, or maybe something i read in the mass wildlife magazine i get? i can't remember. but i think i might have one on my land. and it is springtime now, so it would be a good time to know, right? how can i find out more about vernal pools, and, is there a way to know if i have one?

Vernal pools are unique woodland gems that provide invaluable aquatic habitat opportunities for a special suite of creatures (some of which are threatened, endangered, or of special concern in Massachusetts).

Vernal pools in MA can be certified by the state's Natural Heritage and Endangered Species program. more information on vernal pools and their certification / identification process is here:
www.mass.gov/dfwele/dfw/nhesp/vernal_pools/vernal_pools.htm

Also, check out the "See Your Land" portion of the massacorn website, where we have the maps of all certified vernal pools in massacorn towns. You can overlay the vernal pool layer on the air photos, topo maps, land use, roads, or other layers, and see where the certified vernal pools are!
